Today is the anniversary of the death of our mother, Madeleine.
Louise (Mother Madeleine) Chollet, was born in Roane, France, on February 7, 1846. She grew up in a devoted family and entered the Monastery of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in Lyons, France, in 1867. She received the habit and with it was given the name of Sister Marie St. Madeleine of Jesus.
In December of the same year, she arrived in Galveston; she made her profession of vows on May 31, 1868, in the Galveston Incarnate Word community. In March 1869, accompanied by two companions (Pierre and Agnes), she arrived in San Antonio. Here, she began a life dedicated to the sick, the orphans, and the poor.
She died on this day in 1906 after a brief illness. Download the PDF below to read two interesting articles about Mother Madeleine; the first written in 1981, and the second written on the occasion of her death.
“Her constant request, even in her last moments, was to give God all the glory of the success that she had attained, and to thank him for the innumerable graces which he had deigned to grant to the humble beginning of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio."
