About

The Chapel of the Incarnate Word was built in 1907 by, and for the use of, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word who had come to San Antonio in 1869.

The body of the Chapel measures 564 feet long and 68 feet wide and is built of red brick with white stone facings and copper roof. For many years, the bell tower, with its four trumpeting angels, was the highest structure in San Antonio.

Carved oak stalls are arranged in the monastic style which provides individual seating and facilitates the traditional chanting of the Divine Office. Stalls and side pews allow for 500 worshipers.

Renovations to the Chapel in 2007 marked the 100th anniversary of the Chapel. A new Schoenstein pipe organ was also installed to celebrate the anniversary. The electric-pneumatic action instrument has 24 voices in 27 ranks in the gallery organ, which is connected to the one-manual console organ in the sanctuary. Click HERE to read about the organ, and our Steinway piano.

The Chapel of the Incarnate Word is always meant to be a place of welcome, especially when we gather to pray.  The Chapel serves as the symbolic center of our international congregation, as well as our presence in the community.

We celebrate Eucharist in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word every second Sunday of the month, at 11:00 am; and, on special feasts of the Church year, and of the Congregation.

The Chapel is accessible during regular office hours (Tuesday-Thursday, 10 am - 4 pm).  Please phone 210-828-2224 to inquire about group tours of the Chapel, and of the Heritage Center of the congregation (www.heritageccvi.org).

The Chapel is available to our sponsored ministries for special occasions.  Please inquire at 210-828-2224, ext. 294
