On this day in 1912, Sisters and little boys in their care woke to smoke at 4:30 in the morning. St. John's Orphanage for Boys, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word had caught fire. The newspaper at the time, the Souther Messenger narrated the scene: a sister appeared at the window with an infant in her arms. The fire chief, attempting to reach beyond the length of the ladder to reach the two, himself caught on fire. The crowd below watched as the floor collapsed, and the sister and the infant she was holding disappeared.
Francis O'Brien and Mother Mary of the Cross Rossiter were two of the victims of the fire. Two other children - J. Matloc, and Chris Gillis - perished along with four other sisters - Mother Regis Simpasteur, Sister Peter Claver Slevin, Sister M. Leocadia Nolan, and Sister Monica Montes. One other Sister, Mary Kostka Farrell was paralyzed in the lower limbs and lived at Santa Rosa Hospital for another 53 years.
