The Feast of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter Season. The setting of today's (optional) Gospel is a continuation of Jesus' last discourse to his disciples, given to them on the night before he died. He promises to send the Spirit, an advocate, the Spirit of truth.
The Spirit unleashes a twofold energy within us: the Spirit draws us into Christ, and sends us out to proclaim Christ to the world. Jesus breathes on the disciples and ushers in a new creation, enabling the disciples to take up Jesus' work. Clearly, the gift of the Spirit is for the sake of Jesus' mission: "so I send you ... receive the Holy Spirit." Pentecost is not simply an event that took place once. Pentecost - the coming of the Spirit - happens each time we do the works of God and manifest the Spirit for the benefit of all. Through the indwelling of the Spirit we are able to carry on Jesus' saving mission. For the Spirit recreates us in Jesus' image, and empowers us to live the Gospel faithfully.
We are powerful beings in Christ. How do you use "the power of the Spirit" on behalf of others, in service to others? Do you see the connection between your service to others, and making the Kingdom of God alive and present, now?
La fiesta de Pentecostés marca el final de la temporada de Pascua. El escenario del Evangelio de hoy es una continuación del último discurso de Jesús a sus discípulos, que se les dio la noche anterior a su muerte. Él promete enviar el Espíritu, un defensor, el Espíritu de verdad.
El Espíritu desata una doble energía dentro de nosotros: el Espíritu nos atrae a Cristo y nos envía a proclamar a Cristo al mundo. Jesús respira sobre los discípulos y marca el comienzo de una nueva creación, permitiendo a los discípulos retomar la obra de Jesús. Claramente, el don del Espíritu es por el bien de la misión de Jesús: «así que te envío … recibe el Espíritu Santo». Pentecostés no es simplemente un evento que ocurrió una vez. Pentecostés, la venida del Espíritu, ocurre cada vez que hacemos las obras de Dios y manifestamos el Espíritu para el beneficio de todos. A través de la morada del Espíritu podemos llevar a cabo la misión salvadora de Jesús. Porque el Espíritu nos recrea a la imagen de Jesús y nos empodera para vivir el Evangelio fielmente.
Somos seres poderosos en Cristo. ¿Cómo se usa «el poder del Espíritu» en nombre de los demás, en servicio a los demás? ¿Ves la conexión entre tu servicio a los demás y hacer que el Reino de Dios esté vivo y presente ahora?
