The lesson in today's Gospel is really quite simple. Who are the "lepers" in our own time that are often excluded because of race, creed, social status, gender, illness, any "ism"?
The hardest thing to hear, is that we're called to do exactly what Jesus did. We should be moved with compassion - the deep, visceral feeling of sharing in the suffering of the other.
We are reminded again of the importance or significance of touch, a continuation of the Gospel from last week. Jesus reaches out and touches the leper, thus making him - in his culture - "untouchable" as well.
We can do a lot toward healing by touching; we can do a lot more toward healing of all that divides us, by reaching out to those who are "different." We can reach out in civility, care, compassion, openness, welcome ... all the ways that Jesus reached out.
It is really quite simple, and really, so hard.
La lección del evangelio de hoy es realmente bastante simple. ¿Quiénes son los "leprosos" de nuestro tiempo que a menudo son excluidos por motivos de raza, credo, estatus social, género, enfermedad, cualquier "ismo"?
Lo más difícil de escuchar es que estamos llamados a hacer exactamente lo que hizo Jesús. Debemos sentirnos conmovidos por la compasión, el sentimiento profundo y visceral de compartir el sufrimiento del otro.
Se nos recuerda de nuevo la importancia o el significado del toque, una continuación del Evangelio de la semana pasada. Jesús se acerca y toca al leproso, haciéndolo, en su cultura, también "intocable".
Podemos hacer mucho para curarnos tocando; podemos hacer mucho más para sanar todo lo que nos divide, al acercarnos a aquellos que son "diferentes". Podemos extender la mano con cortesía, cuidado, compasión, apertura, bienvenida ... todas las formas en que Jesús se acercó.
Es realmente bastante simple y realmente muy difícil.
