Cooling holes
One of several ornamented cooling holes on the cast iron frame. The number varies on every piano, but their function is to prevent the cast iron plate from warping. A portion of the soundboard (the “amplifier” of the piano) underneath the frame is viewable through the hole.

Steinway & Sons
Steinway & Sons NY … rebuilt with authentic Steinway parts from Germany. Another view of the cast iron frame (also called the plate or harp). The frame is responsible for supporting the massive tension (up to 30 tons of pressure) of the strings. Prior to the cast iron frame, frames were made of wood and would warp over time.

Steinway B
The lid (or top) affects the tonal resonance of the piano and acts as a reflecting surface for the sound waves emanating from the soundboard. The lid, when fully closed, also protects the playing mechanism of the piano. The height of the lid can be adjusted with a large or small wooden “stick” (lid prop) which come as part of the piano itself. The short stick (or half-prop) keeps the lid partially raised.

Steinway B
The keyboard and fall board (key lid) reflecting the keys. The key lid is pulled down over the keys and protects the keyboard when it is not in use.

Strings
String detail and view of the ornamented cooling holes on the cast iron frame (also called the plate or harp) on the CIW Steinway B. The cast iron frame is responsible for supporting the massive tension (up to 30 tons of pressure) of the strings.
